Comfort Foods - Meat LoafMeat loaf is a comfort food. What makes it so? Jesse, while in college, made the following observation. Whether you like it or not, meat loaf brings to mind memories of having it at a meal. For him, there were two different settings. One is associated with his college friends telling him that the cafeteria meat loaf was a mystery meat entree. The other is associated with family dinners on cold winter evenings. The cafeteria version contained meat that could have been from any source. It could have been hamburger beef. It could have been venison. It could have been pork. It could have been ground turkey. It could have been Spam. Now, that is not very comforting of a thought. The family version, in addition to superior flavor, represented what Jesse experienced while growing up. There were mid-week evening meals after ice hocky practice. There were large gatherings of family and friends. There were occasions when his baby sister helped his mother prepare the meal. Knowing what went into the preparation of the meat loaf was always comforting and not a surprise.
