Summer Comfort Foods
Some people think of summer picnics when they are asked what they
think of when it comes to comfort foods. Family picnic memories in Sunnyvale ring
true for the Andersons. Three generations worth of memories collectively point to
the family secret recipe for great Grandpa Joe's barbeque rub. It did not matter
whether it was pork ribs, beef ribs, briskets, steak, hot dogs, or chicken. Bass,
haddock, trout, and even catfish have experienced the rub before being grilled.
What made the rub so special? Every Anderson family member will have
something slightly different to say, but all will include in their answer something
about the stories they would tell during the meal. The family gathering made the
meal a nice picnic of comfort foods. The Anderson kids liked the baby back ribs.
So did everyone else. Grandpa Jack liked the rub on river trout that he would catch
before the summer festivities. His wife, Jill, enjoyed the barbequed trout
also.
The Andersons looked forward to the summer picnic. Of the 60 family
members in California, all 60 of them would converge for the special day in July.
Every now and then, family members from New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Florida would
join them for the fourth of July Anderson family picnic to share comfort foods and
stories. There was always enough on the grill for everyone. Great Grandpa Joe and
great Grandma Sue made sure that they prepared enough of the family secret recipe
for all the items for the grill.
