Summer Comfort Foods
When Jimmy brought Jessica to the fourth of July picnic that the Andersons put on every summer, she was welcomed with open arms by all family members and relatives. That one summer picnic was the beginning of many for Jessica with the Andersons. She is now Mrs. Anderson to husband Jimmy. Both can speak to what made various items on the picnic menu comfort foods for the Andersons. She speaks fondly of great Grandpa Joe and great Grandma Sue, who actually shared some portions of the family secret recipe for the Anderson’s barbeque rub.
Jessica was a fan of the barbeque chicken. She also liked Grandma Emily’s famous potato salad. During her first visit, Jessica spent considerable amount of time talking to Grandma Emily about her potato salad recipe. The secret, Grandma Emily would say, is to use fresh herbs and spices. And, have a wonderful neighbor like Marilyn to help with the preparation. Jessica was amazed that Grandma Emily had the energy to tend to a large garden just for the purpose of preparation for the picnic.
Jimmy brought Jessica to the summer picnic every other year. He spent alternate summers at Jessica’s family picnic, where he was very much welcomed. They shared good memories of those family gatherings and sharing of comfort foods. The summer after their college graduation was very special. That is the summer when, after the festive meal was completed, Jimmy proposed to Jessica. Everyone was happy when she accepted his proposal without blinking an eye.
